Welcome To Racing Girl
Hi there and welcome to Racing Girl!
Who am I, why am I doing this and what’s this blog all about?
My name is Tai Ryan and racing is literally in my blood. My father Gerald Ryan is a jockey turned successful trainer. My maternal grandfather, Les Coles, rode Even Stevens to Caulfield and Melbourne Cup victories in 1962 and Kingston Town’s jockey Malcolm “Miracle” Johnston is a second cousin…I could go on but you get the drift.

Some of my friends and colleagues would claim I’m a racing expert. Living it the way I do it’s easy to see why they’d think that, but it’s not quite the case. I’ve definitely got the basics sorted but there are so many aspects to this industry and the fact there is always something new to learn fascinates me.
I started out working as a strapper but was never a fan of the 3am starts so I eventually moved into administration. I’m an events and marketing manager by trade and I’ve been so lucky to be able to combine both my passions and make it my career. I spent 7 years working for the Australian Turf Club (Sydney Turf Club pre-merge) as well as being on the Project Management team for Sydney’s only Picnic races at Fernhill Estate in 2013 & 2014.
Upon moving back to Melbourne, I earnt my keep with Princess Park Thoroughbred Farm and racing’s business networking group, Final Field. In 2015, I was named on Melbourne Racing Club’s 40 Under 40 List. Being publicly acknowledged for what I do was a very unexpected and humbling honour.
(Editors note: After contract roles with Melbourne Racing Club and Racing Victoria, in 2019 I am now a freelance event manager).
The industry has always given me a great deal of opportunity so I revel in being able to give something back, and this blog is (hopefully) another way I can achieve that.
At home, I am a mum to my gorgeous son, Benji, and our dog Lexi - a fluffy, arthritic-ridden King Charles Cavalier. Melbourne born, I’ve also lived in Gold Coast and Sydney. I love watching and playing sport (except golf – sorry but I just can’t do it!), a good glass of red wine, and if you point me in the direction of the dance floor, you’ll struggle to get me off it!
So whether you want to know more about early morning trackwork routines, breeding, what to wear to the races, find out what makes some of racing's character tick, or to get a better handle on the industry’s own secret language, you’ve come to the right place.
I'll be posting new blogs every Tuesday so check back in, follow me on any (or all!) of my social media accounts or subscribe. And feel free to drop me a line to say Hi.
Come along for the ride with me, Racing Girl, as we explore racing together!
