RACING GIRL

Behind The Barriers With: Cathryn Meredith

April 18, 2017

Ladies in RACING Magazine is Australia’s only national magazine dedicated to the ladies who love the sport of Kings and Queens, thoroughbred racing.

Published three times a year (April, August and December) Ladies in RACING Magazine (LIRM) covers a range of topics you don’t usually see in other racing publications. Articles include the latest information on racing Carnivals and associated social events, as well as profiles on prominent females in the racing industry, and a dedicated business directory.

Founder and Managing Director, Cathryn Meredith, has worked in the publishing industry for over 30 years both here and overseas across a wide range of industries including sport, fashion, beauty and travel.  A family owned and operated magazine, Cathryn is joined by her father Ron Williams, an avid racegoer and racehorse owner for over 65 years, who writes many stories and is involved with the magazines promotion.

In 2005 on advice from a golf-avid friend, Cathryn started Ladies GOLF magazine. With a personal love of racing and also noticing a gap in the marketplace, the creation of LIRM was a natural progression. Melbourne born and bred, but based in Queensland for over 30 years, Cathryn has a wealth of knowledge and passion for the industry and speaks so highly of women in the racing industry.

LIRM aims to promote not only racing, but the diverse landscape for women to be involved in the industry and smash the stereotype that racing is a man’s world.

“Whether they are a jockey, trainer, vet or administrator, women are not fully aware of the impact they are making in the industry and the barriers they are breaking down for upcoming participants,” said Cathryn.

"Racing wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for women. Not just for the fashion and millinery dollars they generate, but everyone knows that where women go, the men will follow.”

Ladies have made an enormous contribution to the racing industry as owners, jockeys, breeders track riders and in key positions in the corporate world of racing. Ladies in racing here in Australia are headlined by the likes of trainer Gai Waterhouse, jockey Michelle Payne, media personality Francesca Cumani and Victoria Racing Club Chairman Amanda Elliott.

According to recent statistics released by Racing Victoria, 24.2% of Victorian jockeys and 20% of Victorian trainers are women and 49% of stable employees are women. 28 of Victoria’s 67 Country Racing Clubs are also managed by women.

Cathryn believes “Racing is a great social day out with friends and family and these days is about so much more than just the betting. It is a unique event and one of the few places where you can get dressed up and have the option of celebrating a birthday with friends, an anniversary with your loved one or a family picnic while the horses thunder past. It’s great to see so many more women openly embracing the racing industry.”

The Autumn edition of Ladies in RACING Magazine is about to come hot off the press at the end of this month so visit the website to subscribe or find your nearest stockist.

With a readership base of over 60,000, LIRM is a great place for businesses to promote their services to a dedicated and engaged audience. Get in touch with Cathryn today to find out more and tell her Racing Girl sent you!
